Costa Rica | A guide to everything Costa Rica

Costa Rica - Tamarindo Playa Grande

The beautiful and popular beach of Playa Grande is part of the Marino Las Baulas National Park and is though of as one of the best beaches on the Guanacaste coast.

It's here where the endangered Leatherback turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Guided tours are available. However, be prepared to stay up late! The Leatherbacks lay their eggs in the middle of the night and the beach is closed to the public with the exception of these guided tours.

Surf's Up! Playa Grande is also known for its excellent surfing. Even advanced surfers enjoy the breaks and swells of this beach. And, if surfing isn't your thing, there is some excellent swimming just a bit north.

There are a few hotels in the area however none are on the beach to avoid light pollutions for the turtles. The only hotel next to the beach is Hotel Tortugas which is a wonderful place to stay.

Other activities in the area include horseback riding, kayaking, scuba diving, sailing and boogie boarding.
