Palo Verde National Park

Region: North Pacific
Location: from San Jose take the Inter-American Highway north to Bagaces.
Size: 45,492 acres
National Park since: April 30, 1978
Highlights: extensive marshland with excellent bird watching, hiking trails, bio center.
Facilities: ranger station has potable water & restrooms. Biological station has lodging & meals.

This park is for the birds! Literally—as it was created for the incredible amount of birds here, including the rare Jabiru stork.

There are numerous hiking trails: Las Calizas Trail, El Mapache, El Manigordo, La Venada.

The Lomas de Barbudal Biological Reserve, Cipanci Wildlife Refuge and Palustrino Corral de Piedra Wetlands are excelent places to visit.
