Northwest Costa Rica.

Arenal Volcano. Liberia. Puterenas.

Tourist interested in adventure travel must visit the Northwest region of Costa Rica. This region borders Nicaragua and still remains predominately undeveloped. Near by the northern town of La Fortuna is the most active volcano in the western hemisphere dubbed Arenal Volcano. Hikers can get relatively close to the mountain. However, Arenal is unpredictable and can be deadly. Cautions need to be taken. There are many lodges and hotels around town where travels can get a spectacular few. If you would like a better view of the volcano take a ride around Lake Arena, Costa Rica's largest lake. Sailing, windsurfing, and fishing are popular activities.

South of La Fortuna is the region known as Monteverde, which means "Green Mountains". Monteverde too has much to offer adventure seekers. In 1951 a group of Quaker farmers moved to the region from Alabama. Today they operate the Monteverde Cheese Factory, which produces a ton of excellent cheeses. Come hungry. The nearby Cloud Forest Preserve offers some of the most spectacular views of Costa Rica's lush rainforest. Here you can hire a guide to take you through the trails and point out the wildlife. This enchanting wonderland is filled with exotic birds, monkeys, and many other rare species. You'll also find waterfalls, spectacular mountain views, and breathtaking plants.

Northwest of Monteverde you'll find Liberia which is the capital of Guanacaste Province. Liberia is a growing city now with it's own International airport. However, it is often overlooked by tourists. The colonial style town is build amongst many ranches and farms. There are a number of nice hotels and restaurants. Liberia is pleasant get away.

A good bit south of Monteverde is the town of Puntarenas, which came to life as Costs Rica's premier deep-sea port dating back to 1522 when the Spanish arrived. Puntarenas was a major port for exporting coffee to Europe. Today more modern port towns have taken away from Puntarenas. Renovation efforts have been underway to restore the town.
