Location: 60 miles north of San Jose in Alajuela Province.
Size: 35,700 acres
National Park since: June 9, 1992
Highlights: 50% primary cloud forest, Platanar Volcano, thermal hot springs, great birding area
Facilities: no public facilities, hiking paths


Juan Castro Blanco National Park is known for great bird watching. There are 223 species of birds including quetzal and curassow.


Mammels in the area are tapirs, ocelots, sloths, deers and howler monkeys to name a few.
