Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge

Location: 80 miles north of San Jose.
Size: 25,100 acres
National Park since: January 20, 1984
Highlights: migratory birds, fishing
Facilities: none - exploration by boat only.

Located in the northern part of Costa Rica, this wetlands refuge is the home to many migratory waterfowl during part of the year. The Frio River feeds Lake Cano Negro during the rainy season and this wildlife-rich area can only be explored by boat.

Also see cougars, jaguars, ocelots, peccary, tapirs, and several monkey species in the area.
